Those who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disorder, constipation, colitis and inflammatory bowel disease, know how debilitating these problems can be. Whether it is pain and discomfort, or worry and concern, gastrointestinal issues can affect people’s lives in many different ways. Currently, the most common treatment methods for digestive tract issues include medication, dietary modifications and stress management. Some alternative forms of treatments that are becoming more popular include chiropractic and acupuncture care.
I was recently involved in a research study that looked at the benefits of chiropractic care for the management of gastrointestinal disorders. For this study, we examined 21 articles chronicling patient experiences under chiropractic care. The majority of patients not only experienced mild to moderate improvements in their symptoms but there were also no reported adverse side effects with the care. We don’t know the exact mechanism of how chiropractic care helps with the management and symptom reduction of gastrointestinal disorders, but we suspect that it has something to do with the changes in the nervous system. By locating and releasing restrictions in the spine and the muscles, especially in the middle and lower back, we are able to reduce the stress on the digestive system and allow for more optimal function. Chiropractic care, more specifically spinal manipulation, also stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for reducing stress and promoting digestion.
